Item Description
This is a beautiful vintage Japanese cast iron paperweight (Bunchin) featuring a traditional "Chidori" (Plover/Coastal Bird) design.
Passed down from my great-grandfather, this piece dates back to the early to mid-20th century (Showa era / pre-WWII period). It features a wonderful, heavy, minimalist, and organic form characteristic of classic Japanese ironware like Nambu Tekki.
The Chidori bird is a well-known traditional Japanese auspicious motif (Engimono) symbolizing "family safety" and "good fortune/victory."
It has a wonderful, heavy weight for its size and works perfectly as a functional paperweight for calligraphy/desk work, or as a striking Wabi-Sabi mid-century modern rustic decor piece.
