Unusual Atlantisite from Tasmania
Atlantisite it is a commercial trade name for a metamorphic rock composed of green serpentine and purple stichtite.
Originally collected from Stichtite Hill, Dundas mineral field of Tasmania, Australia.
Size is 55mm x 38mm, 20.5 grams.
The serpentine group describes a group of common rock-forming hydrous magnesium iron phyllosilicate with the chemical makeup (Mg, Fe)3 Si2 O 5(OH)4. Serpentine may contain minor amounts of other elements including chromium, cobalt, or nickel. Serpentine may refer to any of 20 varieties belonging to the serpentine group. Hardness is 4 on the Mohs scale.
Stichtite is a carbonate of chromium and magnesium mineral with the chemical formula: Mg6Cr2CO3(OH)16·4H2O. Harness is 2 on the Mohs scale.
