Irish singer Siobhan Fahey of Bananarama formed Shakespeares Sister in 1988. Initially it was a solo project but in 1989, shortly after the release of the first single 'Break My Heart', in came prolific American songwriter Marcella Detroit to make it a duo. 'Stay' was originally released in 1992 and is a co-writer between Shakespeares Sister and a new wave icon in Eurythmics' Dave Stewart. Clearly a match made in heaven, the single was a roaring success topping the UK singles charts for eight consecutive weeks. With the atmospheric, tender intro giving way to an operatic rock finale chorus with impressive vocal acrobatics and earworm melodies, the single retains its greatness all these years later, making it a worthy detour to delve into three different versions of it.
