Ace's long-running songwriter series - Dylan, Cohen, Hazlewood, King and Goffin among previous subjects - returns this time with a focus on Tom Waits and Kathleen Brennan, the long beloved husband and wife songwriting duo. 19 tracks are listed chronologically by song, from Bruce Springsteen's live 'Jersey Girl' to Joan Baez's 'Day After Tomorrow'. Brennan joined as a Tom Waits co-writer from Rain Dogs onwards, and the programme draws heavily on that era through to Orphans. The centrepiece is Johnny Cash's 'Down There By The Train' from American Recordings, a Bone Machine outtake Waits sent to Cash via mutual guitarist Smokey Hormel. "It's got all the stuff that Johnny likes," Waits said. "Trains and death, John Wilkes Booth, the cross."
