Designed to meet the practical needs of aviators, the Rolex GMT-Master Reference 6542 allowed pilots to easily track dual time zones. Originally featuring a luminous bakelite bezel, the model became the subject of controversy in 1961 when a U.S. Naval officer alleged that the bezel’s radioactive properties led to cancer in his family. This prompted Rolex to recall the model and subsequently replace the luminous bezel with a non-luminous variant. By the late 1960s, the bezel had been further upgraded to a more durable anodized aluminum version.
