Original 1581 edition of Digestorum seu Pandectarum Libri Quinquaginta, the celebrated Digest (Pandects) of Emperor Justinian, one of the cornerstones of Roman law and the legal foundation of much of continental Europe.
Printed in Lugduni (Lyon) by renowned publisher Guillaume Rouillé, this edition presents the fifty books of Justinian's Digest with extensive classical references and passages in both Latin and Greek. The work preserves the legal opinions of the great Roman jurists and formed part of the monumental Corpus Juris Civilis, commissioned by Emperor Justinian in the sixth century.
The four-volume set is housed in an exceptionally attractive later full-leather binding with elaborate gilt decoration and raised bands, giving the set remarkable shelf presence. Only one volume comes with a title page indicating the date of publication.
