Description
Description: Original print representing one of the famous silkscreen portraits of Marilyn Monroe created by the king of Pop Art, Andy Warhol.
History and Style of the Work: Origin: Warhol created the original series in 1962, shortly after the actress's tragic death. He used as a basis a black-and-white publicity photograph taken by Gene Kornman for the 1953 film "Niagara."
Technique: The work is created using silkscreen, an industrial printing technique that allowed Warhol to reproduce the image multiple times by simply varying the color combinations.
Meaning: The bright, unnatural, and sometimes deliberately off-key colors transform Marilyn's face into a two-dimensional icon. In this way, the artist reflects on the massification of culture, the cult of celebrity, and the transformation of human beings into consumer products.
Artist's Signature: In the lower right corner, Andy Warhol's handwritten ink signature is clearly visible, as is the number 45/200, which indicates the print run of this specific limited edition.
At the bottom left, the work features a blind stamp imprinted on the paper.
Stamp Identification: The embossing bears the words "GEORGES ISRAEL EDITEUR," a leading name in international art publishing. This historic art publishing house based in Paris, in official collaboration with prestigious institutions such as the Leo Castelli Gallery in New York (Warhol's longtime gallery owner) and the artist's foundation, has published historic reproductions and limited-edition lithographs by great 20th-century masters.
Element Meaning: Edition Authentication: The presence of this embossed stamp certifies that the print belongs to a specific and sought-after authorized editorial run, generally produced on high-quality, heavyweight Arches paper.
Print Run and Collectibility: These Parisian editions, typically printed in the 1980s and 1990s, were produced in pencil-numbered batches (often in series of 100 or up to 3,000) and were intended for the collectors' and museums' market. Backside Counterpart: To confirm the exact provenance of this print run, there should usually also be one or two complementary ink stamps from the Leo Castelli Gallery, New York, and the wording of the Art Gallery, New York, on the back of the sheet.
Date: 1962 approx. ( undated )
Dimensions: Paper size approx.: cm 38,2 x 54,2
