Fore Art 2004 1/72 M19 Multiple Gun Motor Carriage Model Kit
The towing maneuverability of the M-1 anti-aircraft gun (a Swedish 40mm Bofors anti-aircraft gun replicated by Chrysler) is difficult to meet its requirements, and the US Army has therefore proposed the need to modify it with self-propelled anti-aircraft guns. The initial attempt was to install the M-1 anti-aircraft gun on the chassis of the M-3 and M-5 "Stuart" light tanks, as well as a large number of semi tracked vehicles for testing, but the results were not satisfactory. In the end, the US Army expressed satisfaction with the T65E1 40mm twin test anti-aircraft gun, which was improved by installing the M-1 anti-aircraft gun on the chassis of the T24 light tank (i.e. the experimental model of the M-24 "Xiafei" light tank). The T65E1 was further improved and finalized as the M-19 40mm self-propelled anti-aircraft gun. The M-19 self-propelled anti-aircraft gun is equipped with a double mounted 40mm M-1 anti-aircraft gun, with an open frame structure and only shields installed on both sides of the front of the gun. There are 6 crew members and the total combat weight is 16.8 tons. The armor thickness is 12.7-19 millimeters, with a maximum speed of 56 kilometers per hour and an engine power of 220 horsepower. Compared with the M-24, the chassis structure of the M-19 has undergone some changes, mainly due to the front engine and transmission mechanism, leaving enough space for the rear chassis to install the gun mount and rotating components of the M-1 anti-aircraft gun. The entire rotation and lifting of the anti-aircraft gun are driven by electricity, with a maximum  angle of 85 degrees. Due to the end of the war, the production of M-19 40mm self-propelled anti-aircraft guns was reduced from the original order of 904 units to 285 units, which were widely used by the US Army in the later stages of World War II and the Korean War. In many cases, M-19 not only performs air defense missions, but also often uses powerful firepower to suppress enemy ground targets and provide strong firepower support for friendly forces.
