Authentic antique engraving depicting Richard Browne Esq., Major-General of Oxfordshire, Berkshire & Buckinghamshire during the English Civil War (1642–1651). Browne served as one of Parliament’s key military commanders in the Midlands and Thames Valley region, and was later appointed Lord Mayor of London in 1660.
The plate shows a three-quarter bust portrait of Browne in armour, with a cursive caption inside the plate border: “Richard Browne Esq.r Major Generall of Oxon Berk’shire & Buckingham.” An engraver’s mark (“a.s. sc.”) is visible in the upper right of the plate.
Source & publication context: The National Portrait Gallery (London) holds closely related versions of this portrait dated 1647 (by engraver R.S., NPG D27151) and 1649 (NPG D27160). These were printed as standalone portrait broadsides during or shortly after the Civil War, later collected into “Granger” compilations — systematic assemblies of engraved portraits of English worthies. The “a.s. sc.” engraver mark on this impression suggests it may be the 1649 edition or a related contemporary issue.
Condition: Age-toned paper consistent with 17th–18th century printing; some light foxing spots. Image is crisp and complete.
Approx. paper size: 5" × 7". Unframed.
A rare survivor from the English Civil War era — a genuine period portrait of a Parliamentary commander.
