This is a ukiyo-e-style banzuke chart for the 2026 Summer Grand Sumo Tournament, which took place from May 10 to 15.
What is a Sumo Ranking Sheet (Banzuke)?
The Banzuke is the official ranking chart of professional sumo wrestlers. Think of it as a combination of a sports league standings table and a military rank chart. Every wrestler is listed according to their performance and achievements.
Professional sumo has six main divisions:
1. Makuuchi – Top Division (Major League)
2. Juryo – Second Division
3. Makushita
4. Sandanme
5. Jonidan
6. Jonokuchi – Entry-Level Division
Within the top division (Makuuchi), wrestlers are ranked further:
• Yokozuna – Grand Champion (highest rank)
• Ozeki – Champion Rank
• Sekiwake – Senior Champion
• Komusubi – Junior Champion
• Maegashira – Ranked Wrestlers
The Banzuke is updated six times a year. Wrestlers are promoted or demoted based on their performance in the previous tournament.
Unlike most sports rankings, the Banzuke is traditionally written in Japanese calligraphy and has been an important part of sumo culture for hundreds of years.
