Description:
Rare jasperized petrified wood from Hampton Butte, Oregon — sourced from old stock material that’s no longer easy to obtain. Known for its vibrant coloration and dense, agatized composition, this piece is ideal for display, cabbing, or tumbling. A top collector’s item from a classic PNW site.
Color palette:
Includes tones of teal, turquoise, blue-green, and mint, often accompanied by earthy beige, reddish jasper, or smoky grey veining.
Patterns:
May show preserved wood grain textures, mossy inclusions, or plume-like formations. The mix of jasperization and chalcedony replacement gives each piece a uniquely vibrant, fossilized appearance.
Hardness:
Roughly 6.5–7 on the Mohs scale, making it great for lapidary projects and long-lasting display.
Location:
Collected from Hampton Butte, Oregon, USA, one of the state’s most iconic petrified wood sources — now much less accessible.
Formation:
Formed when ancient wood was replaced by silica-rich volcanic fluids, creating a dense mix of chalcedony and jasper. Trace elements like copper, manganese, and iron contribute to the unusual blue-green hues.
Rarity:
Very rare – Especially in blue-green coloration. Most Hampton Butte petrified wood is green, tan, or brown. Blue or teal tones are significantly less common and highly sought after by collectors.
