Just as AP shocked the watch world in 1972 by pricing a stainless steel watch like solid gold, they disrupted standards again in 2002 by taking a ultra-luxury precious gold bezel and deliberately coating it in black rubber. It was an incredibly daring aesthetic move that heavily influenced the luxury sports watch landscape for the decade that followed, remaining in production until 2011. You can immediately identify this specific watch as a 1st Generation Rubberclad because it features a printed AP logo text rather than an applied metal logo, a clean white date wheel, and lacks metal borders around the numerals and sub-dials. The subsequent 2nd generation (introduced in 2012) added applied gold logo markers and matching gold rings around the sub-dials.
