Up for sale is a remarkably rare and well-preserved 3-piece antique Mason’s Patent Ironstone sauce tureen set. This highly collectible set is complete with its original matching bowl, fitted lid, and underplate tray, and it features distinctive, beautifully molded serpent head (looks like ram head at a glance) handles with hand-painted gold detailing on the horns and eyes.
Dating (circa 1830–1848), this early production set features a striking and highly desirable canary-yellow color block palette accented with hand-painted white and gold floral sprays and elegant molded animal head handles.
Backstamp & Authenticity
The underside of the tureen, lid and the underplate both feature the early, authentic blue transfer-printed Mason's "Crown and Banner" mark. It displays the characteristic "Angular Crown" variant used during the factory's earliest patent years under Charles James Mason.
Condition:
This set presents beautifully for being over 200 years old. Small hairline crack on one of inside horns where it attaches to neck.
As expected with genuine 19th-century earthenware, there is typical darkening/staining on the unglazed bottom foot rings and minor glaze shelf-wear on the inner rim where the lid sits.
