1803 [small date small fraction] Draped Bust Large Cent, S-248, authenticated / graded / encapsulated by PCGS as Very Fine, VF-25.  What history at the time of its minting - Jefferson was President, and the Louisiana Purchase became a sealed deal!  This 1803 cent, variety Sheldon-248, was well struck (and moderately well circulated), with just a bit of reverse die drift clockwise a few degrees.  This variety is verifiable online or in reference books with S-248's "extra chin" die mark below Liberty's jaw on the obverse, and deteriorating die on the "U" and "D" of UNITED on the reverse.  But this specimen is evidently a late die state:  as shown on the closeup photo, die fills have caused the left branch of the "U," bottom branch of the "E," and top left of the "D" to be missing.  Even the bottom of the middle ")" in "1/100" is missing, leaving a horseshoe!  These Mint-caused errors number among uncounted ones in this hand-hewn Early American era, but this list is a long one, marking this specimen as premium.  Still, with its moderately high grade, this can well represent the Draped Bust large cent series.
