Welcome to The Textile Trunk , please follow us on Instagram , we are @textiletrunk

What an exciting find! This textile is French , it's an antique late 1700's or very early 1800's section of bed canopy ~ This piece is the bed cover from the collection ~ I found a set of these matching toile pieces to view , simply search my store for the words " Chasse au sanglier ". I've just made a little Instagram video showing this voyage of discovery!~ My instagram is @texitletrunk ~
So, I discovered this textile as part of a set, but I had never seen this pattern, not in all of my many years. I couldn't find it documented either! I contacted Esclarmonde of the Toile de Jouy museum and she too had never seen this ~ HOWEVER when photographing , I discovered this important section of fabric on the back called Chef de Piece ~ or the makers marks! I found that on the bed canopy textile, not this piece, however who knows if there may be one hidden on the fabric of this textile! The Chef de piece read Chasse au Sanglier, hung of the wild boar ( Chasse missing some letters) ~ So, we now had a name for this pattern but I still wondered where it was manufactured and much to my extremely pleasant surprise, on the back with a small square of fabric that read Rouen *( well, it reads Rou ..) Which was enough to tell me that it was printed in Rouen!~ This is a very important historical textile with a makers mark that tells us so much about the history of this piece but also the French history ~ I LOVE my "job" ~
This textile was manufactured in Rouen ~ it's a quilted textile with a light cotton batting between the layers. It's back in 18th century hand woven linen ~ the original tacks are STILL IN SITU! I'm going to leave them in as they are a part of the history of this textile , that I love so much! However, this textile comes with the warning : beware of the 18th century hand forged tacks!~
It's constructed by using the rectangular piece and it has an applied valance at the top ~ it's backed in nubby 18th century hemp ~

MEASUREMENTS : This textile measures approximately 59 inches by 55 inches

CONDITION : This collection is in as found, not freshly laundered condition. This textile has a very dirty section ~ It's my theory that was the area that was directly behind the bed, on the wall, and their antique heads were rubbing up against that for many many years! ~ This textile can be machine washed on gentle( only in a side loading machine ) or it can be hand washed and hung to dry . A wonderful piece of history ~
