From coinage to Canada's national flag, the maple leaf is woven into the very fabric of this nation's history reaching back to the 1700s. In 1858, when the first pennies were struck for the Province of Canada, maple leaves dominated the design. In 1920, an updated motif reduced the number of leavesfrom 16 to two; and in 1937, the maple twig you seeon this coin made its debut—a bold move when the Dominion of Canada created its own designs to reflect its growing sense of nationhood. Today, the same design that defined the Canadian penny for over 75 years continues to inspire, seven years after its retirement from circulation. This commemorative counterpart is twice the size of the original, and is struck in 99.99% pure silver and fully gold plated.

Did you know…
In 1982, the penny's shape was amended from perfectly round to 12-sided to make it easier for the visually impaired to distinguish between denominations. The shape remained 12-sided until 1997.
From top honours to Olympic moments, the maple leaf is tied tosome of Canada's proudest achievements. Its first recorded use as a Canadian cultural symbol dates back to 1836, when the Société Saint-Jean-Baptiste adopted the maple leaf as its emblem.
In 1860, maple leaf was added to the badge of the 100th (Prince of Wales' Royal Canadian) Regiment of Foot, and it later appeared on the Canadian Expeditionary Force's badge during theFirst World War — a crucial chapter in this nation's history.
Three maple leaves were included in Canada's Coat of Arms in 1921. The leaves were originally green, but were changed to red (one of Canada's national colours) in 1957.
The most famous maple leaf? The stylized one on Canada's flag! Our famous red-and-white flag made its official debut on February 15, 1965.
