The legend of Moro heads

According to legend, around the year 1000, in the midst of the domination of the Moors in Sicily, in the Arab district of Palermo "Al Hàlisah" (which means pure or elected) now called Kalsa, a beautiful girl lived her days in a sweet and lonely quiet, dedicating her attention to the bitter care of the plants of her balcony. From the top of her florit balcony, she came one day by a young man, a dark. Overwhelmed by a violent passion for it, the young Moro did not hesitate for a moment to declare her love. Yet the young man, who had not scrupulously made himself in abandoning himself to the sweetest love profuses, in his heart hidden a heavy secret: wife and children awaited him in fact in the East, in that land in which he had to return now.

Wounded in pride and betrayed by what believed to be his great love, the girl planned her revenge. So in the night, while his darkness slept defenseless, killed him and cut his head so that his beloved not only could he no longer return from that family, but remained with her forever.

He decided that the face of that young man, to her yet dear, should have remained at his side forever, and created with his head an object similar to a vase where he placed inside a basil sprout, a plant linked to a divine symbolism and always associated with sacredness. Finally he deposed his head on his balcony, dedicating every day to the care of the basil he grew in it. Every day the tears of the young woman wet the royal plant, which prospered grew becoming more and more florid and luxuriant. The neighbors, pervaded by the scent of basil and looking with envy the plant that vigorously matured in that particular dark -headed vase, made themselves make terracotta vessels that proposed the same features as that lovingly kept by the girl.

Today every dark -headed head that is produced bears a crown, an element always present aimed at re -proposing the royal plant that originally embellished the head of the young Moro protagonist of the sad story.
