Phase-detection AF and Real-time Tracking with screw-drive (motorless) A-mount lenses depends on the camera body. At launch, full AF/AE support with motorless lenses was confirmed on the α7R IV and α6600; many newer Sony bodies have since added support via firmware. Please verify your specific body's compatibility on Sony's official LA-EA5 support page before purchase. Some bodies may require a firmware update. Movie-mode AF is limited on certain bodies. SSM/SAM A-mount lenses (with internal motors) generally work across a wider range of E-mount bodies for stills.

Built-in AF drive — even motorless lenses work
Earlier adapters (LA-EA3) only autofocused with SSM/SAM lenses that had their own motor. The LA-EA5 packs an AF drive unit and aperture drive unit inside the body of the adapter — so older screw-drive A-mount lenses (Minolta-era and Sony pre-SAM) regain autofocus on E-mount bodies that support it.

On supported bodies, the LA-EA5 carries through the modern AF features the body already has — Real-time Eye AF (human and animal), Real-time Tracking, and continuous AF/AE shooting up to 11 fps. Old A-mount glass effectively becomes a modern AF lens.

Φ66 × 31.7 mm, 88 grams. The diameter matches the A-mount itself, so nothing protrudes below the lens line — vertical grips and L-brackets clear it without modification. The form factor is closer to a thick lens hood than to the boxy LA-EA4.

The LA-EA5 contains no glass — purely a mechanical and electronic interface. Image quality from your A-mount lens reaches the sensor unchanged: no light loss, no chromatic shift, no degradation. Just the lens, on a different body.

Lens model, focal length, aperture, and shooting parameters are recorded in EXIF data normally — useful for cataloging, post-processing workflows that rely on lens-specific corrections, and for keeping your archive consistent with native E-mount shots.
