This postcard relates to the Russo-Japanese War (1904–1905), and was stamped and posted in 1909. It depicts the Erhlungshan (Erlungshan) Battery, a pivotal fortification at Port Arthur that saw intense fighting during the siege. The image shows Erhlungshan, which is located in Port Arthur (now known as the Lüshunkou District of Dalian, China). At the time this was mailed in 1909, this area was part of the Kwantung Leased Territory, which was under Japanese lease and administration following their victory in the Russo-Japanese War. The stamps you see on the back are Japanese definitive stamps from the Meiji era. Because Japan controlled the postal system in that region of Manchuria at the time, they used their own currency and stamps at the local post offices. The purple circular "Yokohama" or "I.J.P.O." (Imperial Japanese Post Office) markings are classic indicators of this colonial postal history.
