Beautiful rare Victorian 1800s Comprehensive Bible J.B. Lippincott ORNATE GILT BINDING Antique Family Quarto Civil War Era

Presenting a monumental 1861 edition of The Comprehensive Bible, published by the prestigious J. B. Lippincott & Co. in Philadelphia. This massive, "pulpit-sized" volume was released at the dawn of the American Civil War and represents the pinnacle of 19th-century American religious publishing. It features the Authorized Version of both the Old and New Testaments, complete with extensive philological and explanatory notes, a chronological index, and parallel passages.

Comprehensive Bible series, first issued by Samuel Bagster in London and then reworked for the American market in the 1840s and 1850s. In this format the Bible functioned as scripture, commentary, concordance, chronology, and family archive all at once. The general contents pages and title matter emphasize exactly that combination of uses, listing the substantial introductory essays, historical arrangement of contents, chronological index, subject index, and note apparatus that made the Comprehensive Bible one of the more elaborate nineteenth-century study and family Bibles.

Binding & Aesthetics:

• Cover: Bound in original, deep charcoal/black leather with extraordinarily ornate gold-stamped (gilt) designs. The front and back boards feature deeply recessed paneling with intricate Victorian floral and geometric tooling.

• Spine: A classic "hubbed" spine with five raised bands and further gold-tooled accents.

• Edges: All three sides of the page block are finished in bright gold (All Edges Gilt), which still retains a beautiful luster when the book is closed.

• Scale: This is a heavy, "Monumental" Quarto/Folio size, measuring approximately 12" tall and nearly 3" thick.

Condition Report:

• Completeness: 100% complete. All title pages and indices are present.

• Binding: Good antique condition. Both original boards are holding on. While there is visible cracking and some splitting along the exterior seams (joints) due to the immense weight of the text block, the binding remains structurally sound and continues to protect the volume well.

• Interior: The pages show a range of light foxing throughout, with some pages and engraved leaves showing a more moderate concentration of foxing and age toning (natural age-related oxidation/spotting) and some staining, as is expected with mid-19th-century paper. The text remains fully legible and the paper is remarkably supple.

Wear: Normal shelf wear to the leather corners and spine ends consistent with 160+ years of age.
