The Wangi Wangi Strait 1824 Antique Nautical Map Marquesas Islands Oceania


This is a French map titled Carte du Détroit de Wangi-Wangi (Map of the Wangi-Wangi Strait).


It depicts the Wangi-Wangi Strait, located in the Wakatobi archipelago off the southeastern coast of Sulawesi, Indonesia.

The map was part of the Voyage autour du monde (Voyage around the world) executed by order of the King of France. It was created by Louis-Isidore Duperrey, a French naval officer and explorer who commanded the expedition.

The map features detailed soundings (depth measurements), coastlines, and the tracks of the Coquille as it navigated the strait. The islands shown-Wangi-Wangi, Kaledupa, Tomia and Binongko are now world-renowned as part of the Wakatobi Marine National Park.
