Plan Of The Anchorage Of The Island Of St. Helena 1828 Antique Nautical Map

This map is titled Plan du Mouillage de l'île de St Hélène (Plan of the Anchorage of the Island of St. Helena).

It is a French map of Saint Helena Island and details the coastal features and anchorage area around Jamestown.

The map was created as part of a naval expedition on the corvette La Coquille, commanded by M.L.J. Duperrey, in January 1825.

The survey was conducted by a naval officer, (Officier de la Marine).

Such detailed harbor charts and plans were essential working documents for sailors to navigate safely into harbors, avoid dangers and determine their position using latitude and longitude.

The island of Saint Helena is located in the South Atlantic Ocean, positioned roughly midway between South America and Africa.

While the island is a British Overseas Territory, geographically and geopolitically it is generally considered to be associated with the African continent, as it is much closer to Africa than to South America.
