A rather scarce first edition. Bound in full blue cloth. The binding is firm. Internally there are later endpapers to the front and rear. The half title page has a couple of tears and has been trimmed to the top fore edge corner. The first few leaves around the frontispiece have foxing and toning. There is occasional foxing in places throughout, a little heavier to rear, and the odd light mark. Else reasonable firm and complete.

The book is celebrated for containing some of the first accurate descriptions of leukocytes (white blood cells). Addison used the microscope to observe how these "colourless corpuscles" behaved in the blood and during inflammation. He was one of the first to document that white blood cells accumulate at the site of an injury or infection. The work was part of the burgeoning "cell theory" movement, where scientists were beginning to understand that all living structures.
