A bit of history…..
In the late 16th century, brightly coloured cotton fabrics from India arrived in the port of Marseille, France. They were popular and highly valued.
in the late 1930s, Charles Demery purchased a cotton printing workshop in the Provence region. He named his business Souleiado.
With the workshop came 10 skilled Indian workers and an archive of over 40,000 wooden printing blocks, many dating back to the 18th and 19th centuries. Souleiado fabrics were hand printed using these traditional blocks, preserving the historical craftsmanship.
In the 1950’s the shift to mechanized production began. However, Demery maintained the connection to tradition by transferring the original designs—complete with their small imperfections—onto engraved copper rollers for machine printing. This innovation allowed the business to increase production while retaining the iconic character of the historic patterns and the brand’s heritage.
