Photoplay Edition

Please note there is glare on the DJs that have mylar covers-the shaded looking splotches are not really there.  Some items are photographed in plastic bags-please look at photos carefully.

before we had movie edition books there were "stage play" editions illustrated with photos from the Broadway stage performance. They appeared as early as the 1860s with popularity increasing in the 1890s and early 1900s. Several publishers were involved with Grosset & Dunlap once again becoming prominent in this early field of photo illustration. Random House in the 1940s &50s had a long run of "stage play" editions. Here's what I accumulated over the years, often thinking they were film editions at first glance.

Most photoplays appeared before the movie release in the hopes one would read it promptly or save it for right after viewing the film.  Classic or current novels brought to the screen or a novelization from the screenplay.  ?Read the Book ? See the Picture? became an advertising slogan.  For most titles, the presence of the dust jacket designates a collectible status.

Grosset & Dunlap published this movie edition book.  The novel is written by.  This copy has and contains stills from the film with.  This movie tie-in book is in Very Good condition.
