DESCRIPTION
Authentic Italian-made 19th century brass black powder flask in the classic Civil War-Era style. This teardrop-shaped flask features a beautifully embossed “Stand of Arms” motif on the front, displaying crossed flags, rifles, bayonets, a cannon with wheel, drums, and other military accoutrements. The reverse side is plain with a smooth, aged patina. It retains its original brass top assembly with a tall spout and working spring-loaded measuring lever. Four small carrying rings are present for a shoulder strap (strap not included). A very displayable example of a mid-to-late 19th century gunpowder flask, likely produced in Italy for the American market.
COLLECTOR NARRATIVE
This Italian-made flask stands out due to its bold, detailed “Stand of Arms” design and rich dark patina. The crispness of the embossing (especially the crossed flags, cannon, and rifles) combined with the complete spout mechanism makes it an excellent mid-grade collector piece. Many similar flasks were carried by soldiers or civilians during the Civil War period, and this example has the honest wear and character that serious collectors appreciate for display alongside other Civil War accoutrements and firearms.
HISTORICAL INSIGHT
Black powder flasks of this style were essential equipment for muzzle-loading firearms from the 1840s through the 1870s. During the American Civil War (1861–1865), both Union and Confederate soldiers relied on such flasks to carry and dispense black powder. The “Stand of Arms” motif — featuring crossed flags, weapons, cannon, and drums — was a popular decorative theme. Many high-quality examples, including this one, were produced in Italy and exported to the American market.
