February, 1951 (Showa 26).
Six years have passed since the end of the war.
On a train bound for Zushi, a lone man travels in silence.
His name is Shugo Takashiro, a former officer of the Tokyo Metropolitan Police Department.
Looking down at the newspaper headline resting on his lap, he frowns.
“Serial Grotesque Murders of Prostitutes.”
The case is unlike anything Japan has ever seen.
His former superior, Kazuma Arishima, is in charge of the investigation — and it is because of that connection that Takashiro now finds himself traveling to Zushi.
“Will you take this request?”
Arishima had once been his superior in Changsha, Manchuria, and the Tokyo Metropolitan Police.
Takashiro could not refuse his request.
The task assigned to him is the disappearance of a young woman from a prestigious family.
At the Kozuki household, where the disappearance occurred, Takashiro encounters a woman named Kana Kozuki.
She bears an uncanny resemblance to Yura Kozuki, Takashiro’s former lover — someone he believed he would never see again.
Kana pleads with him to find her missing sister.
But the Kozuki parents deliver a shocking truth:
“Yura hasn’t disappeared.
She is already dead.”
Falsehood and truth begin to intertwine.
And now, in the city of Ueno, the curtain rises on a new tragedy.
