Shagaku was a Japanese monthly magazine focusing on photography, published by Shogakukan.
It was launched in 1980 (Showa 55) and ceased publication in 1985 (Showa 60).
Overview
It published 69 issues over a period of just over five and a half years, from the June issue released on April 25, 1980 (Showa 55), to the February 1986 (Showa 61) issue released on December 23, 1985 (Showa 60).
Its concept was “Enjoying photographs as one enjoys sound.”
This also became the origin of the magazine's name (a coined term).
The reason for discontinuation was stated by the editor-in-chief in the final issue as “various circumstances.”
It gained popularity by featuring actresses and other women primarily on its covers and opening gravure spreads, employing famous photographers for nude work and high-profile models.
It was launched as a photography magazine centered on Kishin Shinoyama, prompted by the success of his ‘Gekisha’ series selling 100,000 copies each, and especially the 1978 (Showa 53) bestseller photo book ‘Great Gekisha: 135 Female Friends’.
