This genuine Byzantine bronze 20 nummi coin was issued under Justin II and Empress Sophia (AD 565–578), one of the most recognizable and historically important reigns of the early Byzantine Empire. Their joint portraiture is especially notable for emphasizing the shared authority and imperial partnership that defined their rule.

The obverse features Justin II on the left and Sophia on the right, both seated facing on a double throne, each with a nimbus (halo). Justin holds a cross on globe, symbolizing divine authority over the Christian empire, while Sophia holds a long scepter, emphasizing her prominence and influence at court. A cross usually appears between their heads, underscoring the sacred nature of their rule.

The reverse displays a large K, indicating the denomination of 20 nummi. The inscription ANNO appears to the left, a cross is placed above, and the regnal year stands to the right, following the standard system of Byzantine dating. Below is the mintmark KYZ, identifying the coin as a product of the important mint at Cyzicus.
