This lot offers, not one, but two antique beauties behind glass, with some interesting embellishments! Included in the set is this pair of two items of related interest—a framed postcard and a framed paper doll, both featuring women having human hair and other fanciful details. Starting with the post card, it portrays a beautiful woman whose likeness is adorned with real human hair. The wavy curls are worn loosely past her shoulders, resting at her breast line. The illustration is slightly risqué for the times, with a hint of what her bosom might look like underneath the thin fabric of her bodice. I’ve seen a number of these post cards with hair, but the hair is always short and curly, not long and lush as with this comely maiden. There are dried flowers further accentuating her lovely locks. Removing the post card from the frame allows one to see subtle, and not so subtle, signs of wear, including a faint craze line that runs horizontal across the card at her chin. The frame is made from wood, and the post card is backed with old cardboard. All components show age related wear. The frame measures 6 1/2” by 4”.
The second piece is a framed paper doll, again with human hair, arrayed in little ringlets. Her skirt is adorned with row upon row of pink ruffled lace. Both her hair and her large bouquet are embellished with a multitude of silk ribbon work rosettes. This type of craft must have been promoted in lady’s periodicals of the day. It seems to have been a popular pastime, as you can find other examples from time to time. In this lot you get both specimens of ladies decorated with real hair! The wooden frame that holds the doll measures roughly 7 3/4” by 5 3/4”.
In the last picture I give a glimpse of some related items that I currently have listed, including more ribbon work. These items are NOT included here, but will be available in separate listings. Please take a look, keeping in mind that I would be happy to combine shipping whenever practical. If more than one item is won, please be sure to ask for, and WAIT for an invoice combining shipping BEFORE paying.
