Japanese Asanoha Lantern – Handcrafted Hinoki and Washi Light

This lantern is created by interpreting the story woven into traditional Japanese washi paper and shaping it into a quiet, gentle light.

The vivid colors of the washi, combined with seasonal motifs, softly emerge when illuminated.

The Asanoha (hemp leaf) pattern has long symbolized straight and healthy growth, carrying wishes for a child’s well-being, protection from illness, and longevity.

In this piece, the artisan pairs the Asanoha design with diagonal latticework, forming a structure that feels both geometric and sacred.

Each lantern is crafted through a meticulous process: the completed box is cut apart, reconstructed, and layered again to create a three-dimensional interior space.

This depth allows the light to diffuse softly through the washi, giving the lantern a sculptural sense of shadow and form.

Recommended placement

Powered by battery-operated motion sensor lighting, the lantern quietly illuminates areas of natural darkness—

entryways, hallways, bedroom entrances, or restrooms.

It serves not only as a source of light but also as a gentle presence that offers a sense of safety and calm.
