George IV sterling silver tinder box type vesta case by John Thropp, Birmingham 1826. This object pre-dates striking matches, a flint was used to create a spark among dry tinder kept in the box. Both sides mounted with steel striker bars. Rear panel engraved with a dragon type beast in a ducal crown. Original owner monogram TCJY? engraved to the cover.
Maker mark IT (John Thropp); Birmingham assay office mark; lion silver mark; date letter C for the year 1826; King George IV portrait duty mark.
Various minor dings but overall good condition. The hinge snaps shut nicely.
