Handmade in Brazil between 1940 and 1960, this unique piece showcases the beauty and artistry of nature. This was brought back from Brazil by my stepfather was a Merchant Marine in the 60's-late 90's. The colorful marquetry adds a touch of elegance to any room, making it a perfect addition to any collection or decor. Each piece is one-of-a-kind, as no two trays are exactly alike due to the natural variation of the butterfly wings. This Brazil Morpho Butterfly Wing Tray Marquetry is a serving tray or wall hanging that features intricate designs made from real butterfly wings. This striking vintage serving tray features a beautiful mosaic of real butterfly wings arranged in an intricate geometric pattern beneath glass. It measures 18.5" x 11.25” and is about 2" in depth. The only significant flaw I can discern is a small split in one corner that can likely be repaired by someone better equipped in wood repair (see last photo). The iridescent blue wings shimmer under light, surrounded by warm natural tones and delicate inlay work.
The information below is the "recommended" description from a party much more knowledgeable about these trays:

Materials & Species
This tray uses real butterfly wings, expertly arranged:
-
Blue iridescent wings: Blue Morpho butterflies
-
Yellow / brown / black wings: likely Catonephele, Heliconius, or Caligo species
-
Wings are hand-cut and layered, not whole specimens — a hallmark of authentic Brazilian work
The iridescence and slight natural irregularities confirm authenticity.
Wood & Craftsmanship
-
Solid hardwood (likely Brazilian walnut / imbuia-type wood)
-
Mitred corners, routed edge, and inset glass
-
Integrated hand-cut handles — higher quality than later souvenir trays
This is not a modern reproduction.
