Offered here is a rare and uncataloged production variant of the iconic Wilton Armetale “Spirit of ’76” Bicentennial commemorative plate, produced during the mid-1970s.
While the standard retail versions of this plate were issued with ceramic inserts featuring decorative star or scroll borders, this example features a “Plain Field” (borderless) white porcelain insert—a design that does not appear in Wilton retail catalogs or mass-market Bicentennial releases.
Why This Piece Is Different
• Borderless Ceramic Insert (Plain Field Variant):
The absence of a decorative border is significant. In commercial production, borders were used to conceal alignment tolerances. This plain-field design required precise centering of the central eagle motif and is therefore associated with small-batch, non-retail, or foundry-direct production.
• Hand-Assembled Construction:
The ceramic insert is secured by hand-turned metal retention tabs, visible on the reverse. This method is consistent with manual assembly rather than automated retail production.
• Authentic Foundry Markings:
Marked on the reverse with the RWP (Ralph Wilton Pewter) hallmark and “Columbia, PA”, identifying the historic Wilton Brass Company origin. The Columbia marking is commonly associated with earlier or specialized production runs.
• Uncataloged Configuration:
Extensive review of period dealer catalogs and modern reference inventories (including Replacements Ltd.) indicates that this specific borderless ceramic configuration was not a standard retail issue.
Historical Context
Wilton Armetale produced millions of Bicentennial items for the 1976 celebration; however, variant pieces assembled outside of national retail distribution were often sold directly through the foundry, select boutiques, or produced in limited internal runs. These variants were not consistently documented, making surviving examples scarce.
