For sale is an HO Scale Model Power Jersey Gold “Wescott & Winks Butter” Reefer Car, catalog #8261, equipped with Kadee-style knuckle couplers. This car is used and comes exactly as shown. A colorful and collectible addition for operators and reefer enthusiasts alike.

History
Billboard reefers like this one trace their roots to the early 20th century, when railroads routinely hauled private-company refrigerator cars across the country. These brightly lettered cars advertised dairy companies, breweries, grocers, and regional producers. Though real billboard advertising was banned from railroads by 1937 due to regulatory concerns, the style lived on in the model railroading world, where companies recreated or imagined striking graphics to capture that nostalgic charm. The Wescott & Winks Butter Reefer follows this tradition, invoking the era when perishable products moved by rail in eye-catching style.

Model Power, founded in the 1970s, became well-known for producing affordable but visually appealing HO freight cars. Their reefers in particular gained a following for their vivid artwork and compatibility with popular operating systems. While early Model Power cars used horn-hook couplers, many hobbyists upgraded them with Kadee knuckle couplers for better performance—making this example especially desirable for modern HO layouts. The addition of KDs enhances reliability, smooth switching, and compatibility with most contemporary rolling stock.

Collectors appreciate these cars not only for their visual appeal but also for their connection to the golden age of hobby railroading. Vintage Model Power reefers remain popular among operators because they track well, offer attractive liveries, and blend seamlessly into mixed freight consists. This Wescott & Winks version is both a nod to dairy industry history and a fun, eye-catching piece that stands out on any HO scale railroad.
