■Overview
Editor-in-Chief: Akira Suei
The core of the photography pages featured Nobuyoshi Araki.
Prominent photographers like Daido Moriyama, Seiji Kurata, and Keizo Kitajima also published their work.
According to Araki, the magazine's name came about when he and Suei were drinking in Shinjuku. The topic of Hyōketsu Jidai (published by Obunsha) came up, leading to a conversation about how “the era of photography is coming.” From there, the name “Shashin Jidai” was born.
Moriyama stated that for eight years during the 1980s, he did almost no work outside of his serialized contributions to this magazine.
Moriyama made his mark with grainy black-and-white photos, while Kurata documented the raw, palpable presence of Kabukichō and the yakuza.
Other contributors included Shigesato Itoi, Kōshi Ueno, Dan Takasugi, Nobufusa Minami, Kazuhiro Watanabe, Kyōko Okazaki, and Kaoruko Himeno.
Akahigawa Genpei's serialized column “Super Art Tomason” in the magazine sparked a boom, gathering numerous reader-submitted photos of “things that exist proudly despite being utterly useless.”
■Cancellation
Due to repeated warnings from the Metropolitan Police Department over Araki and others' radical expressions, the magazine ceased publication with its April 1988 issue.
