DESCRIPTION: Sporting some pretty interesting cover art (courtesy of Henrietta Condak and Robert Grossman), I first ran across this album in 1971 at the college radio station where I had a weekly show (and then forgot about it). It wasn’t until years later that I came across a reasonably priced copy at a record/CD show I was set up at and picked up the copy that now sits in my collection. Thanks to the BadCatRecords website I now know more about this band (Fuzz Acid And Flowers had earlier supplied me with what little I knew at the time I picked up my copy). The following is a condensation/editing of what you can read about the band on the BadCatRecord site along with some comments by me:
The group originated from a band in Miami, Florida called the Bad Boys (1967), also known as The Nervous System. Membership and the band name changed over the next three years, becoming Peace & Quiet by early 1971. A final shuffle in the line-up took place just before recording began for this album. Prior to joining Peace & Quiet singer Steele had kicked around with a number of Southern Florida bands, including The Villagers. Bassist Tolliver had followed a similar path, recording with The Birdwatchers and Razor's Edge. By the time the band attracted the attention of CBS's Kinetic label, the line up featured Steele, Tolliver, guitarist Roger Pavlica, keyboardist Chuck Witherow and drummer Gregg Williams. Relocating to Massachusetts their debut (and only album) Peace & Quiet was recorded in New York with Larry Fallon producing. It's a surprisingly impressive collection. I've seen this album described as being psych, but that's not a particularly accurate description. Their sound draws from late 60s heavier rock with elements of psych, jam rock, and jazz, with melody, placing this at the cusp of progressive rock. The depth and variety of influences and maturity of the sound of there music told me these guys had been around for a while. Featuring six extended tracks (two tracks at 3+ minutes and 4 tracks in the 6-8 minute range), material such as You Can Wait Till Tomorrow and Country Thing are more along the lines of hard rock, with occasional progressive moves. This may not sound very promising to some, but Steele had a good voice (occasionally giving the band a Deep Purple-ish feel – there are a couple of reviews out there that draw comparisons to David Coverdale) and all six tracks boasted strong melodies and enthusiastic performances. Stand out track is the closing instrumental Looney Tunes, though the initial surprise for me was appearance of Flock violinist Jerry Goodman on one track. I wonder if these guys ever crossed paths with Tin House? In conclusion, this is a strong second tier band, not essential but worthy of your further investigation (check out their music on-line). If you’re a crate digger, like myself, you’ll want to have this in your collection.

GENERAL INFORMATION:
All CDs come sealed in standard jewel cases and are US releases unless noted otherwise. mini-jackets, digi-paks, and variable (non-standard) packaging will also be noted. Any item that does not come sealed or include an outer sleeve will be placed inside of an outer sleeve at the time it is received by me. All items that do not come sealed in an outer packaging wrap are inspected by me prior to shipping. It is not unusual to find small/tiny imperfections on the play side of the CD disc, especially on European manufactured CDs; these small imperfections do not affect the playback of the disc. Also an unsealed jewel case may show light signs of warehouse/transit storage wear on the outer surface of the jewel case. If an unsealed jewel case is received by me broken, it will be replaced with a new jewel case before shipping; sealed CDs received with minor cracked/damaged jewel cases will be noted as such in the item?s description and will be shipped as received.

Other companies use resealable clear outer sleeves which are used on some import and domestic releases. If I receive an item this way it will be shipped as I received it and not opened up. Items received unwrapped are placed inside of a resealable clear outer mylar sleeve at the time they are received.
