About the EL5

Introduced in 1936 by Philips as part of the red-series lineup, the EL5 marked a significant leap in output power for European pentodes - doubling plate dissipation from 9 to 18 watts to meet demand for higher-power audio in console radios and public address systems. The EL5 appeared alongside its 4V sibling the AL5, just as the American 6L6 beam-power tetrode emerged to serve the same market need across the Atlantic. This example was manufactured by Tungsram Budapest under Philips license and carries the characteristic red spray-metal coating that became the signature of Philips power output tubes throughout the 1930s. The military surplus box (marked M 2463, 553 C) indicates this tube was procured for military or government communications equipment, where the EL5's robust construction and high output power made it ideal for field radios and command post stations. The EL5 saw deployment in 57 documented European radio models before being superseded by the more powerful EL12 and the alternate-base EL6 design.
