This Halcyon Days Enamel Box represents "The Waving Girl" Florence Martus (1868 - 1943) She was an unofficial greeter for ships entering and leaving the Port of Savannah, Georgia for 44 years (from 1887 - 1931) From her home on Elba Island, where her brother was a lighthouse keeper, she waved a handkerchief by day and a lantern by night to every single passing ship. A bronze statue of Florence and her Collie dog, sculpted by Felix de Weldon, stands in Morrell Park on Savannah riverfront to honor her legacy. The SS Florence Martus, a liberty ship, was named in her honor in 1943.
