There are many beautiful objects that can be found in nature – animals, birds, plants to name a few – but nothing has captured the imagination and desire of mankind as much as precious gem stones. In his book “Gems: A Lively Guide for the Casual Collector, author and gem expert, Daniel J. Dennis, Jr., first examines our fascination with gems and their interaction with light, and the surprising route gemstones take from rough stone to cut, polished, and set in jewelry. He then looks at more than 100 different gemstones in detail, from diamonds (which have their own chapter) and rubies to garnets, opals, and a host of less familiar gems. Published by Henry N. Abrams, Inc., of New York, it is filled with 57 illustrations, including 52 in full color, this user-friendly guide of facts and folklore is a wonderful addition to any library – for the rock hound, to casual gem buyer, to the lover of fine jewelry, it will answer your questions and guide your learning in a casual lighthearted style.
