New York Central’s “Lightning/Lighting Stripe.”
NYC’s post-war streamliner aesthetic—two-tone gray with the white side stripe—was made famous by trains like the 20th Century Limited. The design suggested speed and elegance crossing the Water Level Route from New York to Chicago. MTH modeled that vibe here: understated gray, bright lettering, and just enough ribbed side detail to suggest real stainless or fluted sheathing, depending on the prototype you imagine.
Combine & Diner, a classic pair.
The Combine (Baggage/Coach) gave railroads operational flexibility—mail/express up front, a small passenger section aft.
The Diner instantly elevates any consist; on real trains, diners were the social heart, where white-tablecloth service turned a trip into an experience. On the layout, it’s the car people ask about first—especially when the lights are on and figures are inside.
About MTH RailKing.
MTH created RailKing to give operators rugged, reliable, curve-friendly models with strong detailing and lighting at a good value. These cars reflect that mission: die-cast trucks for tracking, bright interiors, and durable ABS bodies that hold paint beautifully.
Add passengers (O-scale seated figures) and a few LED table lamps in the diner to turn evening ops into a showpiece.
Consist building: Pair with an NYC Hudson (e.g., 2046/2055/Lionel Legacy/MTH Premier) and tack on an Observation or Sleeper later to grow the train.
Scene setting: Spot the Combine at a depot with mail sacks and express crates; stage a mail transfer vignette for storytelling.
Photography tip: Dim the room, set your camera to a slow shutter, and let the interior glow streak along your mainline—instant calendar shot.
Track: O-Gauge; designed for O-27 curves and larger. They look fantastic on O-31/O-36+ as well.
Couplers & height: Standard O-gauge knuckles—mate with Lionel, MTH, K-Line, Williams, etc.
Power: Works with any conventional AC transformer; interior lamps are ready to run.
