About the Artist:
James Carl Hancock (1898–1966). Born in Tennessee, Hancock moved to Arkansas as a child and eventually settled in the Little Rock area. He was a self-taught etcher, painter, and commercial artist.
He was renowned for his detailed etchings of city scenes, particularly the French Quarter in New Orleans. Some of his notable works include Court of Two Sisters and St. Louis Cathedral.
He was also known to etch and engrave "backwards" to produce images.
His work is part of the permanent collections of major institutions, including the Smithsonian Institution and the Ogden Museum of Southern Art.
