a bronze & iron staff, with the image of a head and a long body, known as:

Edan Ogboni

this figure on a rod, known as Edan, was owned by members of the 

Ogboni secret society, earlier called Osugbo,

from Nigeria and/or Benin, f.e. the Yoruba People 

this is probably one out of a pair, once linked together with a chain between the heads, 

Edan were used as amulets and were carried by Ogboni members as a sign of membership to the lodge,

although called staff, Edan Ogboni are not held in the hand, but worn on the body,

length including iron spike: circa 22 cm / circa 8.6 inch,

it shows a beautiful, authentic old patina on bronze and iron,

condition: authentic patina, firm and stable - please see the pictures, they are part of the description,

seen the patina and casting we date this figure as 19th Century or early 20th Century

provenance: a private Dutch collection of mainly old Yoruba figures,

weight: circa 167 gr.
