After Stacy Gaudreau, the founder and lead designer of Hexinverter, made the difficult call to close operations, Erica Synths collaborated with Stacy to preserve his company's innovative engineering spirit. With the Mutant Clap module, Erica Synths and Hexinverter blend a voltage-controlled LFSR (Linear-Feedback Shift Register) and percussive synthesis engine. This homage to the percussive panache that began with the dance world’s underground scenes of Chicago house and Detroit techno transmutes the iconic clap into a 909-style drum synth to suit the imaginative ecosystem of Eurorack modular synthesis. Out of reverence for their roots, Erica Synths and Hexinverter built the Mutant Clap to capture the classic character of its precursor while expanding its aural aperture with a slew of filtering, effects, and drive controls, impressing Sweetwater’s synthesists with its dazzling array of sound-design possibilities. Moreover, the onboard engine’s state-of-the-art processing lets you synthesize claps from any external audio source, surrendering complete control of its sonic-sculpting tool kit to wield with the sounds of your setup, giving you virtually limitless opportunities to explore and personalize your percussion-synth power.
The defining clap sounds of early house, techno, and acid styles are the Mutant Clap’s starting point. However, the Hexinverter design reimagines its hallmark sound for the modular, interoperative potential of voltage-controlled Eurorack systems. The onboard Reverb emerges from the tone of the clap, including one generated with an external source, and its voltage-controllable Decay parameter is perfect for long tails, evocative reverb snaps, and wildly modulated spatialization. Furthermore, the Reverb’s 3-way selector lets you toggle between internal and external audio, as well as deactivating it, but applying it to the clap tone generated by an external source is a surefire way to traverse uncharted Eurorack terrain. A built-in bandpass filter features a dedicated Cutoff control, in addition to a Filter output, and the accompanying Drive effect takes you from subtle to supercharged-overdrive sonics. Used together, the Mutant Clap’s percussive possibilities bloom with potent and prismatic texturization.
Thanks to the Mutant Clap’s cutting-edge synthesis engine, any external audio source can be transformed into a clap of its own with all the pre-module processing in tow. Apart from near-infinite customization and the use of the full force of the Mutant Clap’s multidimensional sound-shaping suite, the foundational LFSR noise VCO supports two additional lanes of timbral exploration. A dedicated Noise output lets you wield the VCO as a voltage-controlled noise generator, conjuring retro-style chip tones reminiscent of the early 8-bit video games of the Commodore 64, with melodic possibilities abounding via the Noise output’s use with the Pitch CV input. Alternatively, cranking up the Sustain parameter transforms the onboard Mutant Clap into a highly abstract synth-voice — this capability summits otherworldly peaks when used in conjunction with an external source and all subsequent pitch and texture tools!
