Description:
This is an authentic 19th-century Firmin-Didot Paris edition of Veduta delle Cascatelle a Tivoli, one of Giovanni Battista Piranesi’s iconic engravings from the Vedute di Roma series. It captures the dramatic force of the waterfalls at Tivoli with Piranesi’s characteristic precision and grand scale. The title “Veduta delle Cascatelle a Tivoli” translates from Italian to:
“View of the Waterfalls at Tivoli”
This plate is cataloged as entry No. 92 in Arthur M. Hind’s 1922 reference Giovanni Battista Piranesi (p. 64). The etched signature originally read:
“Cavalier Piranesi del. et inc.”
In this impression, the word “Cavalier” is trimmed off, but the rest of the plate is intact.
The print includes:
Plate number “59” in the upper right
Firmin-Didot catalog number “811” in the upper left
These confirm it as part of the posthumous Firmin-Didot edition, printed ca. 1820–1835 in Paris.
A side-by-side comparison image with the Yale University Art Gallery’s complete version is included in the photo gallery to show the minor image loss and verify authenticity.
*Please see the FLAW in the side by side photo comparison where this copy is trimmed approximately 1.5 inches on the left edge.
