Pte. Foulkes, with regimental number 5258, served in the 2nd Battalion of the King's Own Yorkshire Light Infantry during the Boer War. This 2nd Battalion deployed to South Africa and in key battles like Modder River and Belmont.

He Saw action at Belmont, on 23rd November 1899, the Yorkshire Light Infantry were in the supporting line, taking some casualties .
At Modder River the 2nd battalions performed invaluable. Work . under Colonel Barter, assaulted taking some positions on the side of the river which commanded the drift.
The battalion's losses being 1 officer and 8 men killed, and 3 officers and 50 men wounded. Colonel Barter was mentioned in dispatch’s of 1st December 1899.
the operation ended in the surrender of commander Prinsloo, with Paget's force taking part.
On 25th June a convoy left Kroonstad , The escort was 800 mounted men, elements of the Yorkshire Light Infantry, supported by units. Of the 3rd East Kent, 4 guns City Imperial Volunteers' Battery, and 2 of the 17th RFA, under Colonel Brookfield.
The convoy was heavily attacked on the 26th and 27th by the enemy, with 2 guns, These attacks were driven off and the convoy was brought in.
On 26th June Private C Ward of the Yorkshire Light Infantry was awarded the VC for carrying a message to a signalling station through a hail of bullets. Insisting on returning to his mates and he was wounded.
The 2nd Battalion: was a regular battalion of the KOYLI, a long-standing and respected British infantry regiment.
