Aeonium ‘Black Rose’ (Aeonium arboreum ‘Zwartkop’) is a rare and dramatic succulent admired for its deep purple-black, almost gothic rosettes. Native to the Canary Islands, this eye-catching plant features fleshy, glossy leaves arranged in tight rosettes atop thick stems—perfect for adding bold contrast to succulent gardens or container arrangements.
Each rosette can reach up to 6 inches wide, with older leaves darkening beautifully under full sun. In summer, it may produce tall flower stalks with bright yellow blooms that stand out against the dark foliage. During hot summer months, Aeoniums may go dormant, dropping leaves temporarily—this is normal and helps the plant conserve energy.
Aeonium Black Rose prefers well-draining soil and full sun to partial shade. Water sparingly, allowing soil to dry between waterings. Cold-hardy down to 25°F (-4°C), though some winter protection is recommended in frost-prone zones.
