Omari Alois Amonde (1940 - 2015) generally signed his paintings OjJAJAMONDE. He a was friend to and sometimes called the half brother of E.S. Tingatinga who originated the Tingatinga genre of painting. After struggling at manual labor for survival, Ojajamonde joined Tingatinga and became one of his students in 1972 -- a month before ES Tingatinga's death in 1972 . He then became the student of other students of Tingatinga, primarily Mpata, Adeus, Tedo and Linda.
When Ojajamonde died in 2015 he was the last of the painters to have known Tingaginga himself.
Ojajamonde's paintings are happy, colorful, fanciful and lyrical. The subject matter are animals, birds, and people that communicate a sense of familiarity between all his subjects.
Although a scene of a dental office may not seem to be a celebratory situation worthy of a painting, "Western" dentistry was very magical to many of the peoples of Tanzania including Ojajamonde who originally came to the area to labor on sisal plantations. For people who had the same dental problems as all people, having access to more modern dentistry was miraculous.
