South African marigold (Osteospermum) is an ornamental plant with bright colors and long flowering period.
It is native to South Africa and is suitable for growing in a warm and sunny environment. The following are
detailed planting methods to help you cultivate successfully:
1. Sowing time
Best season: spring and autumn (when the temperature is stable at 15-25℃).
Spring: March-April in the north and February-March in the south (to avoid the cold in late spring).
Autumn: August-September in the north and September-October in the south (avoid early frost).
Other areas: it can be planted all year round in warm areas in winter, and it is recommended to raise seedlings
indoors in cold areas.
2. Soil preparation
① Soil requirements:
Loose and breathable: garden soil can be mixed with humus soil, river sand or perlite (ratio 2:1:1).
② Good drainage: avoid sticky soil and prevent stagnant water from rotting roots.
③pH value: neutral to slightly acidic (pH 6.0-7.0), and a small amount of decomposed organic fertilizer can be added.
④ Disinfection treatment:
Exposure method: spread the soil and expose it to the sun for 2-3 days.
Medication method: pour carbendazim solution thoroughly for sterilization.
3. Sowing method
① seed treatment:
Soak in warm water: soak the seeds in warm water at 30℃ for 4-6 hours to improve the germination rate.
② Sowing step:
Hole sowing: put 2-3 seeds in each hole, and cover the soil about 0.3-0.5 cm.
Sowing: Spread evenly on the soil surface and cover with thin soil or vermiculite (avoid being too thick).
③ Moisturizing and heat preservation:
-Watering with watering can, covering with plastic wrap or glass plate for moisture retention.
-Put it in the scattered light at 18-25℃ and germinate for about 7-14 days.
④ Intercropping:
After the seedlings grow 2-3 true leaves, keep strong seedlings with a spacing of 15-20 cm.
4, light and temperature
(1) light:
-During the growing period, direct light is needed for 4-6 hours every day, and insufficient light is easy to grow
in vain and flower less.
-Shade properly when it is hot in summer (especially at noon) to avoid leaf burns.
② Temperature:
-The growth temperature is 15-25℃, and it can withstand short-term low temperature (above -5℃), and it needs
to be moved indoors for long-term low temperature.
-When the temperature is higher than 30℃, strengthen ventilation and spray water to cool down.
5, watering and humidity
-Seedling stage: keep the soil slightly wet to avoid water accumulation.
-Mature period: Follow the principle of "seeing dry and seeing wet", and the topsoil shall be thoroughly poured
after drying.
-Summer: water in the morning and evening, and avoid watering at high temperature at noon.
-Winter: Reduce watering frequency and keep the soil dry.
6. Fertilization management
① Growth period (spring and autumn):
Apply * * diluted universal liquid fertilizer once every 2 weeks * *
② Bud gestation period:
Switch to high phosphorus and potassium fertilizer to promote flower bud differentiation.
③ Note:
-Avoid burning the roots with thick fertilizer, and water it in time after fertilization.
-Stop fertilizing at high temperature (> 30℃) or low temperature (< 10℃).
7, pest control
① Common pests:
Aphid/red spider: spray with soapy water or control with imidacloprid and abamectin.
② Common diseases:
-Powdery mildew: strengthen ventilation and spray mancozeb or chlorothalonil.
-Root rot: control watering, and irrigate the roots with carbendazim when the disease occurs.
-Prevention: Clean up dead leaves regularly and avoid close planting.
8, pruning and coring
-Picking the core to promote branching: when the seedlings grow to 8-10 cm, the terminal buds are removed to
promote the growth of lateral branches.
-Pruning after flowering: Cut off residual flowers in time to reduce nutrient consumption and prolong flowering period.
-Plant type arrangement: cut off the weak branches and over-dense branches, and keep ventilation and light transmission.
9. Precautions
① Pot management:
-Choose a permeable pottery basin, and change the basin and soil every spring.
-Move to the shelter in rainy season to avoid the basin soil from getting too wet.
② Ground planting management:
-Before planting, turn over the soil and mix with base fertilizer (such as decomposed sheep manure).
-Cover with plastic film or straw for cold protection in winter.
③ Seed collection:
-Keep the seed pods after the flowers wither, collect the seeds after drying and store them in a cool and dry place.
Through the above steps, South African marigold usually blooms 3-4 months after sowing. Its rich colors
(common purple, pink, white, etc.) and flowering period can last for several months, making it a bright choice
for gardens or balconies.
