Ad mats, short for advertising matrices, were used in the printing process to create molds for casting metal type or plates, primarily in letterpress printing. Made from materials like papier-mâché or flong, they were pressed against a composed type form (text and images) to capture an impression. This mold was then used to cast a metal stereotype or electrotype plate, which could be mounted on a printing press to produce multiple copies of advertisements, illustrations, or entire pages. Ad mats allowed for efficient reproduction and distribution of standardized content, especially in newspapers and magazines, enabling consistent printing across multiple publications or locations.
